The most common species of the genus in mesic grasslands and also frequently present as a ruderal. Very frequently mistaken for Viola odorata L. which has green radicant at nodes repent stolones while in this species the stolons are totally subterraneous. Also the white portions at the base of the petals in this species larger than in Viola odarata.
